View Full Version : Question about cacti and MAOIs

I've become a big fan of San Pedro and Peruvian Torch. I found that when I ingest two or three grams of finely ground Syrian Rue with the cactus, I can cut the amount of cactus needed by three-fourths. This is a tremendous cost advantage, not to mention it's sooo much easier to swallow 35 gelcaps than 120 (my preferred method - dried, pulverized and encapsulated.) Problem is it's hit or miss with the Rue whether or not I will be able to hold everything down, at least long enough for full effect. I never have such a nausea issue with the cactus alone. Do other reversible/plant MAOIs tend to have the same nauseating effect? I wonder if there might be another that's easier to stomach then Syrian Rue. Any wisdom or advice is appreciated, I know there are some very knowledgeable cactus lovers around here.
Also there wouldn't seem to be much danger in combining an MAOI with the mescaline would there? I've read in numerous places that it could be a hazard, but many trip reports show no ill effects from the combination. Also I believe Ott said it wasn't a risk. I've never noticed an excessively racing pulse or increased blood pressure, but could easily soar for hours without thinking to check for that sort of thing :D

It's really not the mescaline you have to worry about when you mix San Pedro or Peruvian Torch with MAOI's...it's the tyramine and tyrosine contained in the cactus that can cause a serious problem. It won't for everyone, but it's always best to err on the safe side. I advised in the book I wrote not to combine p. harmala or b. caapi with l. williamsii or t. pachanoi, simply because while being dead may make you a lot more spiritual of a person, it won't help you work on your spirituality at all.

daniel prefers that people avoid discussing and recommending specific usage scenarios here on BOTH, but I will say that B. caapi and P. yohimbe are the only other plant MAOI sources I'm aware of and I doubt there is that kind of a difference in terms of nausea. Supposedly eating cooked rice beforehand helps with that and I'm sure you'll find a ton of other natural remedies online. I'm sure you've also read about the rectal infusion which does not seem to be talked about much in the West. Guaranteed to avoid nausea but if you're anything like me, that area is clearly labled "Exit Only".
