i don't like people on this site to post specific recommendations for illegal practices. Personally, most of my thoughts on the subject are in my book. I would recommend the natural and traditional substances over the chemical ones, which are more dose-sensitive and unpredictable. I would also recommend the ceremonial context with a shaman, if you can find it. If you live in the South-West there might be the Native AmericanChurch around somewhere. There is also Breathwork and "soul retrieval" and other non-substance-oriented ways to break into non-ordinary states, I really don't recommend that people get "fried."

i'm not really looking for another LSD experience.even though i did enjoy the one i had.mostly interested in going the mushroom route.i ended up getting some a couple weeks ago and had a good time but i feel like it would've been a better experience if i had done something more shamanistic.or at least been around people who were into the same thing.it sucks when you're tripping and feeling the energies of the universe flow through you and all the other people around you can say is,"damn, look at that girl's ass!".should've known better than to do it with stoned fratboys.

hey man, just take yourself off on your own, if your in LA the desert isnt too far away. let yourself 'be' there, and then use what you want to use. frat boys are the same the world over dude, they are spiritually stunted and purely symptomatic of a dying age, best to stay clear when tripping.

Years ago, I had some entertaining experiences visiting East Village bars on mushrooms - drunks can seem hilariously out of synch and slowed-slurred-down when you are on mild doses of psychedelics.
If you could bring yourself to appreciate the fratboys as a kind of aesthetic anthropological display of whatever it is that is, you might be okay.
Death_E,
I'll pitch my hat in with LowLight, good suggestion, I might just remind you to take some water.
Set and setting have a lot to do with ones experience.

Death_E,
I would recommend what works for me: Salvia divinorum. It's legal, the effects do not last long (a few minutes), but long enough to change your perspective on life as you now know it. Googling will find many sites, but do visit sagewisdom.org, and READ about this plant and its effects. The Salvia sagewisdom sells is good, but higher priced than other sites. I prefer smoking it in "extracted" form. I especially like the 16x (he doesn't call it this)material he sells in capsules.
Do it with a friend (a "sitter"), and with great respect.

Death_E,
I agree with Matt. Salvia is truly an alternative
Although very different than other entheogens
We recently put up a site dealing with much info on psychedelics, entheogens and various buddhist approach. On the 'growing salvia" page you will find "info links on salvia" where you can find salvia info and supplies http://www.dharmakaya.netfirms.com
