View Full Version : Octopus-the God Machine
Last night I got to the chapter of Rational Mysticism that deals with the God machine and it turns out that I knew a guy at college with one of these. He said I could try it but I never did.
Has one any had any experience with the Octopus?

You mean Red Octopus, the Jefferson Starship record? Yes, I love the song Miracles on it. Great track. I love the way Marty Balin sings. His voice reminds me a lot of peanut butter.
No, i'm sorry this is an acutal device, not an album. here's a link for a better explaination

Don't worry ryan, it's on CD now. You don't just have to get the L.P. There is a remastered copy and it sounds great. It is like you are in the studio with Grace right in front of you. One of my birds is also named Grace, ya know. He says, "Pretty bird." but that's about it.
I was considering getting it, but it would have to be on vinyl, JS doesn't transfer well to digital. But I've heard that listening to it too much will turn you into a prick.

You don't have to resort to childish namecalling because you can't handle the fact that a joke was made in your post. It's fine to play along, but your the only one that end up looking bad when you resort to personal insults like that.
Especially bad when you posted something in a forum that it doesn't belong in. This has nothing to with about psychedelic drugs. Why would you even post it here? This would be much better off in the science/shamanism forum.

I actually pondered for a while about where to start this thread. But since the device causes sensations in the same part of the brain as psychedelics, causing mystical experiences/visions I figured this section was close enough. Given your experimental nature I thought you'd be intereseted.

I was interested. I enjoyed the article. I am sorry if you were bothered by my response, but I did not enjoy the name calling that resulted from it. But oh well, I'll survive...somehow.

I think about how these experiences might overlap - God Machines and psychedelic compounds.
My experience with different psychedelics is that they change the "wave form" of consciousness in particular ways. It may be that a "God Machine" does this externally, thus causing some of the same effects.
I also sometimes suspect that the type of research that produces "God Machines" will lead to devices that produce endless orgasms or endorphin rushes - combine this with better-quality VR and you have the possible endpoint for a large section of the human species.

Daniel: Any thoughts on the merging of computers and the noosphere and psychedelics? The next step from the optopus might be computor chips in the brain allowing for esp, or a kind of mega-brain comprised of all those equipped with the chip, experiencing a collective will. And if we could "trip" from the machine, we might find ourselves in contact with the over-mind facilitating a planet birth (of mind). Then again we could end up under the control of a world government with our chips acting as The Mark on our brow. I have had hints of some kind of merging with computers but I can't bring it back if you know what I mean. BTW, what did you mean by "...an endpoint for a large section of the human species." ? I'm guessing you mean someone hooked up to an endless orgasm machine would be unwilling to get off of it--like the lab rats who'll lap up cocaine until they starve to death.
