Hi Daniel

just a quick note to let you know that your book is in our public library here in San Diego and it has a good review from the library journal typed in the computer catalogue and online catalogues. Including it here, just in case you are not aware of it. Being included in a library catalogue is a sign of having made it into mass consciousness in my view. Congrats for your good work.

From the Library Journal

In this firsthand account of the world of psychedelic substances today, Village Voice and Rolling Stone writer Pinchbeck weaves elements of his personal life, including vivid descriptions of his reactions to the substances he takes, with larger topics, such as the history of psychedelic substances in the modern world and the foundations of shamanism. To aid his inquiry, he participates in visionary rituals around the world, e.g., taking iboga as part of a tribal initiation in Gabon. He also discusses key figures such as Timothy Leary, Allen Ginsberg, and Terence McKenna. Pinchbeck repeatedly decries the rationalism and destructiveness of Western culture and the shortsightedness of completely outlawing psychedelic substances. The book is not an extended diatribe, however. The author offers various viewpoints on how certain drugs should be used and on whether a modern, Western shamanism is possible. Pinchbeck posits a universe that may be difficult to accept, but his book will be of interest for public and academic libraries.-Stephen Joseph, Butler Cty. Community Coll. Lib., PA

BOTH is also in the public library here in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (Canada)... which is where I discovered it for myself in the first place... And of course, I've since passed it on to other friends around the area (and received my own copy as a birthday present, which was even better for a second read through).

Lookin forward to the next book even more, after lurking this forum for about a year now

Good for Saskatoon. My hometown is too cool. They did a lot of experimenting with LSD there in the 50's and 60's. Dr Hoffer and others. He now lives in Victoria. There is a footnote about it in Grob's book, Hallucinogens.

I have been seriously considering moving to Canada. I have even made the first preliminary immigration enquiries. As part of the immigratiuon process, one has to choose a preliminary location- so they can find you a job in that location. It speeds up the immigration procedure. I was thinking Toronto, but was wondering in the opinion of the canadians posting above, which city/town do you recommend? I am interested in cultural and alive conscious communities - cities are good, I like urban living, but not too brutal urban. I also prefer places with public transport. Saskboy, you do not seem too impressed with Toronto...If you feel like explaining why, I would be grateful, but will understand if you don't. This is not really the forum for this kind of questions, but just thought I'd ask :)

Thanks!

Hi Katie!
I'm from Toronto, now living in NYC,
but my choice for a Canadian city to live
in would be Vancouver or maybe some other town
close by, on the West Coast.....
It's very beautiful there, close to the Rockies, and the ocean,
well you are SoCal so I guess you know about the
differences between East Coast and West Coast...
seeya!

Hi Katie,

I live on Vancouver Island and I would definitely second the reccomendation for Vancouver. It is a beautiful city. Ocean front, the Fraser River, the mountains, the islands....Lots of communities, 2 universities and countless colleges.

I think house prices are very expensive....in my opinion.
400,ooo.oo and up.

My son rents and goes to Uni there. he pays 650.00 for a room in a large house.

Food is reasonable but alittle different than the states I think. Sizes are metric. A litre of gas is about 90cents. A cup of coffee is $1.50.

The communities around the city are a little more reasonalbe. There is a website to check out realestate. "MLS".

keep me posted!

Thanks Gift Horse for all the details. All very interesting. I was looking into this a bit more today and it is sounding more and more like a good idea. Well, we shall see. Putting it all in my thinking cap for further processing...

Thanks again!

I just finished reading the book and I am feeling so motivated and intrigued by so many different things. My brother in law left the book behind when he moved and I was immediately drawn to it. It is available in my local library but reading BOTH has spurred me on to check out other books as well. Daniel, if you happen to be reading this I just want to say thank you so much. Your book has taught me a lot and has encouraged me to learn more. I don't mean in the way of experiementing with psychedlics...I have a new apprecation of them from your book. I never realized there was so much more involved with taking them than just to "get high". I've placed a hold at my library for Doors of Perception by Aldous Huxley. Now that I've read BOTH I just have to know more. I was sad when BOTH came to an end. But so appreciative at the same time for the tremendous information that was provided in it. As well as the possibilities that it has opened up to me in ways that I really can't express in a posting.

Thanks for the good idea! I'll put a request in at the Toronto Public Library.
