I thought this was a decent, balanced thought piece on Kesey's work:

Thanks a bunch, Daniel! Kesey at his best would be a visionary in any time. I think he is best remembered as a successful performance artist and social critic, rather than a one-book wonder. His story should be instructional, however, for those who don't realize how much hard work it takes to be a successful writer.

Nice. I like the criticism of "first thought, bet thought" -- often first is worst.

I just read One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, and liked it more than I thought I would. The promotional material was way more misogynist than the actual book.

I think the book's description of electroshock was very good. The prose captures a genuine delirium. I knew someone who was insulin shocked by Ewan Cameron (pre-CIA but way creepy). The massive shattering of scale-space-time corresponds to a mushroom or pneumonnia trip.
