I just finished reading a pretty good book called The Green Labyrinth: Exploring the Mysteries of the Amazon. It's by Sylvia Fraser, a well-respected Canadian journalist and novelist. In this book she details her trip to Peru to stay with various shamans and take ayahuasca. It's very personal, descriptive, and provocative, as she asks a lot of questions, raises possibilities, and lets them hang in the air for us readers to meditate on. The thing I like about Ms. Fraser's journey is that she is an older woman, in her 60s, and she made this journey alone. Apparently what spurred her into the trip to the Amazon is an acid trip she had in the 1980s when her head was "broken open" and she began following a long path that also took her to India.
