Bopes, thanks for this posting--it lured me over to Reality Sandwich, and was an interesting read (if my mind did start to glaze at times from a surfeit of adverbs). At least the Titans can spell.

you know, something like:
Round One (DING!)
Erik Davis comes out with some flashy pop-cultural moves, trying to get the crowd involved and . . . what is he saying? Is he actually trash-talking the Mayan Long Count!? . . . I can't believe it! The crowd goes wild.
But Pinchbeck seems unimpressed. He wades in with some probing jabs, trying to take the measure of Davis ...
The round ends inconclusively ...
Round Two (DING!)
Davis opens with a wild one-two combination of rhetorical flourishes, as if to show that he is not intimidated by Pinchbeck's sober, deliberate, (almost glacial) pace: "we don't know what the Mayans thought would happen in 2012," !!! followed by -- ooohhh!!-- an indictment of "the whole memetic industry of 2012 speculation". Ouch! was that a low blow, Howard? The referee is not intervening. The crowd is booing.
Pinchbeck is moving in now. That last combination appears tro have gotten through. But if anything it looks like it only made Pinchbeck angry. Here's Pinchbeck, looking for an opening. He nods to Davis, as if in respect, but then --- oohh he's going to the body now. He's landing some heavy body blows on Davis. He recommends that Davis actually read the Popol Vuh! He recommends John Major Jenkins! I don't know how Davis is managing to hold up under this punishing assault... Now Pinchbeck is ... he's mocking Davis with Davis's own words!!! "kinda disrespectful" !!! Put that in your "narrative" !!! Oh my goodness! Showing the crowd he can do the trash-talk thing too!! The crowd is eating this up! Now Pinchbeck is ... he's actually unpacking Davis's rhetorical flourish!!! Have you ever seen the like?? Davis is reeling ... That's gotta hurt, Howard. Down Goes Davis! Down Goes Davis! Down Goes Davis!
What's this? Ladies and gentlemen, this is unprecedented. It looks like a man in a gorilla suit has just jumped into the ring!! Could this be the proverbial 500 pound gorilla? No it's ... It's John Major Jenkins himself!!! He's wearing a gorilla suit!! Is this a debate or a professional wrestling match? The crowd is going berserk. Jenkins is gesticulating wildly. He appears to be declaiming to the crowd! He's dissing his academic rivals! He's beating his chest!!! But he does not appear to be taking sides!!! He's going on (and on, and on...) For the moment, Pinchbeck and Davis have stopped pummeling one another .... This is a real break for Davis, because it allows hime to gather whatever is left of his wits . . . [to be continued]

I found bopes description of the ‘Titans’ much more to my liking; I enjoyed the metaphor.
I am looking forward to more from bopes on this subject.

Seriously, I think all those guys are terrifically creative and highly intelligent, but I hope they figure this one out before 2012. It would certainly take me at least that long to form my own educated opinion, and then it would be too late.

bopes... it's funny, davis seemed untouced on my screen, perhaps with the under-his-breath exceptions of pinchbeck's "jungian perspective" and "non-dual" blows. true, he must be somehow shook by pinchbeck's rhetorical tasmanian twirlings, but the man who wrote 'techgnosis' must have seen this all before.. but he is also more that trivially intrigued and so i sense there could still be things unsuspected by any mind, bound to happen. (as always!)
jenkins seems to be greatest suitable surprise guest, and no doubt he will make this bout both longer and harder, and thank god for that!
should we put down some money?
i suppose we're gonna join in at some point too!

Yes, Davis picks himself up off the mat and makes a respectable showing in the 4th round, to the point where Pinchbeck actually extends an olive branch. (Perhaps similar to the famous Spongebob vs. Patrick frycook grudge match episode?)
But it aint over. It was a tag-team melee the last time I looked. Various people jumping into the ring from all quarters.

(I tried to post this on Reality Sandwich, but I have not received my password via e-mail.)
Alan Watts once commented with a sly tone that when self thought or appointed ‘gurus’ meet there is always sparkle at best and sparks when things move towards a defensive and offensive play.
Watts commented on the Bodhisattva Buddha who ‘like the birds in the sky leave no tracks’.
I was directed to this particular exchange of ideas from the BOTH web site where it was described as a ‘clash of titans’. In fact that was the title of the thread.
Alan Watts has been dead since 1973, but his observation is still quite alive (wink).

My second attempt to obtain a ‘log in’ pass word has failed to be fulfilled by ‘Reality Sandwich’.
They are either inept or they do not want a comment from sidecross.
If this is what the menu proposes as a ‘Reality Sandwich’, then I will cancel my order.

LOL
In a gesture of respect for Daniel's Reality Sandwich project, I haven't even tried. Although to be truthful, I wouldn't play the same character over there as I do here. Probably best not to assault RS with this moveable peanut gallery.
Willow, I'm a simple man. Those literary allusions go right over my head. BTW, I guess you didn't see my post on the other thread asking whether you still have your Saturday Night Fever album. Now that we're living through Vietnam and the hippies again, it's pretty clear what's next.

She still won't answer. :p :p
Seriously Willow, don't you remember Tony Manero and the priest older brother and all those crucifixes and the streets of Brookly and the brownstones of Manhattan? And "the girl". I thought that she was a world famous actress then, and she was, but you know what I found out a few years ago. After the fame wore off she had to go find work as a secretary.
When was that, 1977? Little did I know, then, that I'd roam those same streets for 20+ years. New York, New York. I had no idea then. But now I can keep those two memories side by side in my mind like they're happening at the same time. Strange.

I have no idea why, but I will spend my time here at BOTH.
