Forked from: Halfglass is dead (http://www.breakingopenthehead.com/forum/showpost.php?postid=12479)

I received a message from a friend of his that Halfglass - Daniel Carpenter - ended his life last weekend. I was forwarded this small news item:

Daniel F. Carpenter
Bucks County Courier Times

Daniel F. Carpenter, age 42, of Levittown, died suddenly on Saturday, July 30, 2005.

Born in Wiesbaden, Germany and formerly of Virginia and New Mexico; Daniel was a resident of Levittown for the past 38 years. Daniel was a 1981 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. Recently he signed a contract to have a book published from his life experiences. Daniel was an avid outdoorsman who loved the mountains and hiking and an accomplished musician where he will be fondly remembered for his band "Minds at Large".

Daniel is sadly missed by his loving parents Francis J. and Carol A. (nee Wooten) Carpenter, of Levittown. Beloved brother of Deborah Carpenter, of Sacramento, Calif. and David Carpenter, of Levittown. Loving uncle of Christopher, Jeffrey, and Michelle. Also survived by his aunts Jane Slevin, Harleen Rieck, and Geraldine Kofke and all their families. Daniel will be sadly missed by his fiance, Melissa Yates.

Family and friends are invited to call Wednesday, August 3, 2005 from 6-9 p.m. at the James J. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., 2200 Trenton Road, Levittown, Pa. 19056. Service and interment will be private.

I am saddened, surprised, and deeply shocked by this news. Dan was looking forward to the publication of his book on his inner journeys with DXM - I assume that Inner Traditions will still release it, though I don't know for sure.

That this news follows the death of Michael Heany nine months ago only makes it more depressing and worrisome. I am going to do some serious introspection about the intentions and direction of this discussion board, and rethink this area of psychedelic work. I have been feeling, more and more, that working within some shamanic lineage or discipline is necessary for people who want to get involved with the plant medicines at this point in time. These deaths are making me even more acutely aware that people really need some sort of healing modality and ceremonial context for exploring these substances in a healthy manner. I think this is especially true at this point in time, when psychic energies - dark as well as light - seem to be exponentially magnified.

It is also the case that people with a shamanic disposition are the edge-dwellers of contemporary reality, as Manning has explored so beautifully in her "Schizophrenia and Shamanism" topic. Sometimes edge-dwellers do not survive their own revelations - however I never had any sense from Dan that he was in personal danger.

I wish his soul a peaceful journey.
