I got this mail from a fellow friend recently (I am a PeakOiler just to put things in context):

The heck with peak oil as a concern. I wake up every day (assuming I have slept) drained, exhausted, self-confidence and energy eroded, but fighting on even though I am always dealt the same (or even enhanced worse) card hand that is unplayable, but I am forced to play.

The name Yakuza meaning Japanese gangsters comes from "893" (yattsu, ku, san).

This name originates from a card game called oichokabu, which is usually played with a deck of hanafuda (花札) (flower cards). (A normal deck of cards can also be used if the Kings, Queens, and Jacks are removed and the aces are regarded as 1).

A player's score in this game is decided by adding the scores on several cards and using only the smallest digit. So because 8 + 9 + 3 = 20 = 0 points, "8-9-3" means "no points". So the original meaning of yakuza was "no points" or "useless". Later, this meaning changed to "useless people" or "gambling people".

The irony is that I do not gamble and I am not useless. However, the universe has decided to jam this alien persona onto me. Every day I begin with an 893 deal, regardless of whether I am finally relaxed or stretched or anything good in the previous 24 hours. My endurance for this ebbing. Not surrendering to it though. Astronomically beyond hard.

Best Wishes in the meantime on your efforts (Figured I ought to send some while I still can.)

End of transmission (e-mail transmission that is).

Anyone who can relate?

I usually speak in pictures.
