In today's NYTimes, Thomas Friedman ponders:


"It baffles me that President Bush would rather go to Saudi Arabia twice in four months and beg the Saudi king for an oil price break than ask the American people to drive 55 miles an hour, buy more fuel-efficient cars or accept a carbon tax or gasoline tax that might actually help free us from what he called our “addiction to oil.”

The failure of Mr. Bush to fully mobilize the most powerful innovation engine in the world — the U.S. economy — to produce a scalable alternative to oil has helped to fuel the rise of a collection of petro-authoritarian states — from Russia to Venezuela to Iran — that are reshaping global politics in their own image.

If this huge transfer of wealth to the petro-authoritarians continues, power will follow. According to Congressional testimony Wednesday by the energy expert Gal Luft, with oil at $200 a barrel, OPEC could “potentially buy Bank of America in one month worth of production, Apple computers in a week and General Motors in just three days.”


The big mistake that many of these big thinkers make, including Friedman? is presuming that they are smarter than Richard "the Dick" Cheney.

Speaking of photographs Willow,I got a new camera for Christmas and hope to post some soon.Maybe create our own blog,but anyway Willow.You have to promise me you will go down to the square,as late as possible and take some pictures.Look to the east.A new star appeared on my eastern ski.

I remember very well,facing the same conditions you find yourself in and wondering,
"How did they people who were here 100 yrs ago survive this,how low did they have to go to get something to eat,much less,a warm safe place to stay at night.
I really am intrigued by the site above Taos where the StageCoach crossed the Rio Grande during the 1850's goldrush.Just about a mile south of the John Donne Bridge.StageCoach Springs.Get out and take some picture :Ds and hot baths.
Will be a bunch of neat people at those really hot springs due west from you on the other side of - Los Alamos.Get to work.
I would be up to doin a site search seeing I lost a fairly valuable ring in the hot spring house at "the StagecoachCrossing".I also may have gotten a bunch of bitches from UNM pregnant there as during the summer of 76 they would float down the river and there was alway some bich that had cocaine at or near that time for look for the next messiah to have been born at or near Dec,79 from UNM, "All be Quirk" New Mexico.Ha.You are what you think and I think I am sayeht a Laird.Ha.More Sunshine.
You might even head up north to the original Anazasi center of the wheel-Ojo Caliente.The seven existing pueblos all came from Posi at Ojo Caliente.
It's an area that should be developed.I went there in 76,and since has been sold by the family to fellow that makes his money servicing oil rigs out of Louisana.
We really need a healing center at Ojo.

Fair weather still holding out here amongst us Indians.
Several hundred lbs of tomatoes still frost free on the vine and venison, fresh filleted fish,and spagetti squash on the outdoor grill.
