-----------------------------------------------------
A bill (HR 5607) introduced in Congress on October 10, seeks to make the
Mazatec ceremonial plant Salvia divinorum and its active principle
Salvinorin A the next outlawed drugs under federal law. The Center for
Cognitive Liberty & Ethics (ccle) is organizing and preparing opposition
to HR 5607, and is also calling upon all interested people to express
their opposition to this unwarranted extension of the US war on drugs.

This is appalling. When I received this update, I took a few moments and crafted a quick letter to my "representatives". I've yet to hear back, but I'm sure it will be the usual Pinocchio inspired drivel.
Peace,
Jeremy

Hey you guys, keep writing those letters to your representative , letter writing works, best if you get a bunch of your friends together, you then constitute "a voting block" politicians are scared of voting blocks especially if their seat is marginal . Mike Moore (whatever you may think of him) goes into detail about this in his book Stupid White Men and Other Sorry Excuses for the Nation . I don't think they are going to promise to do something about it if you vote for them, they don't give a **** about you once they've got your vote but they are definitely worried that you won't vote for them !
Where I live (Australia) Salvia is already banned I didcovered it too late .At the moment we are the only country in the world to have banned it .

Alasdair,
Do you know why Australia banned it? What was the argument? Had anybody been hurt by it? What is Australia's laws on ayahuasca, iboga, DPT, 2-CT7, etcetera?
It would be interesting if some western govs admitted they were simply and directly outlawing alternative modes of consciousness.

"…It would be interesting if some western govs admitted they were simply and directly outlawing alternative modes of consciousness."
Western governments, or at least the U.S. government, see psychedelics not only as a catalyst for change of consciousness, but one that in the shortest of time can create a tremendous paradigm shift. Government, which is the enforcer of Global Market Economies, knows quite well that all the "smart bombs', military hardware, and infatuation with habitual consumerism will be of little importance once a paradigm shift of consciousness takes place.
We should not delude ourselves; we are partaking in something dangerous to those who control the status quo. Not all of us will or can stand up to the internal and external chaos that any paradigm shift of this magnitude can arouse.
What is needed is courage. Others before us have faced the same dangers, and we have the chance to continue.

What interests me is how "consensus consciousness" works as a kind of organism, let's say an amoeba with permeable boundaries, always testing its limits, retracting or expanding. Post 9-11 has been an extraordinary collective retraction of the limits of "consensus consciousness." The 1960s were clearly an expansion to the point where the fissures started to grow too wide for the collective organism's well-being.
In New York right now, I feel surrounded by such a terrible silence, such a blockage from thinking through any of the issues that actually matter to the future of our planet or our species. We will need to go through the inevitable cataclysm before change becomes possible for whoever is left, in whatever planetary conditions.

There is currently running a news story out of San Francisco where six new penguins were introduced to the zoos penguin population. These new penguins began swimming the circular pool of their new environment; they were duplicating their normal species migration behavior. For reasons best known by penguins the entire zoos penguin population followed suit. These other penguins never before showed such an interest.
I live in Oakland California, and the bay area has the same malaise daniel expressed about NYC. Many of us are primed, poised, and ready for the human equivalent six new penguins.

I heard the same story about the penguins,my immediate thought(with a smile)was,Wow,the penguins are doing ritual, some kind of magic. As I understand they have not yet swam the distance they would in the wild to reach land during their migration.I try the best I know to send them strength and love.Wouldn't it be something if they were able to win their freedom by this act of
?
On the subject of outlawing Salvia,Please don't forget about Alan Shoemakers ayahuasca trial coming up.The info on where to send a contribution is listed elsewhere in this forum.
It is sorely needed, and even if you can't afford a lot, contribute what you can.

Six New Pelican
What I found the most poignant about the pelican story was that being a pelican is paramount. Whether they reach a migratory destination does not in itself fully define the pelican. The six new pelicans did not bring anything new or profound; what they might have done is awaken the pelican nature in the other pelicans.
We as humans are in our own zoo. Beside the power of the 20,000 to 30,000 years of human activity in manifesting our zoo, we ourselves are left as the zookeeper.
What awakened in the pelican at San Francisco showed that revelation could happen when least expected.

Daniel,
I'm not sure what the reasoning behind the banning of Salvia was, I have only just discovered the stuff, the call to action came to late for me.The guys on this site may be able to help you
http://www.shaman-australis.com/Website/law/SalvialnTrouble .htm
The TGA (Theraputic Goods Authority) in Australia are known for being awkward, yes even worse than the FDA, in fact drug companies often trial stuff in Australia , because it's easier (and cheaper) then get it approved by the FDA because it is easier to get something approved by the TGA once the FDA has said ok .
In my field (Chinese Herbal Medicine) they banned a herb called Xing Ren which is a form of bitter almond, because European bitter almond is toxic, without checking, if they had checked they would have found out that it is much milder than European Bitter almond. The same story with Yin Chen Hao a member of the artemesia family it has traces of wormwood in it, again the same story, much milder . To their credit they did recind the ban after much lobbying . However they are given to knee-jerk reactions . Try their website www.health.gov.au/tga/search.htm (http://www.health.gov.au/tga/search.htm) let me know if you can make head-or-tail of their search bot.
