Bad/laced drugs?

Throughout sometime I've heard stories, or possibly myths, of drug tampering. People poisoning or somehow poluting drugs, like marijuana. Sometimes lacing it with other drugs as well.

I was wondering if there was any truth to these stories? It seems like a dealer wouldn't want to kill a customer. For that matter, waste money/drugs to lace it with something they didn't pay for. Have any of you seen drugs that have obviously been tampered with without the buyers knowing/consent?

If so, how often does this happen?

I hope this isn't a waste of a post. I've just heard so much about it and didn't know a better place to get such a thing cleared out/verified.
